After much anticipation, our press release has arrived fashionably late - a delay that only amplifies the excitement and showcases our newest and most elegant costumes. Good news, after all, has its own rhythm, and ours has crescendoed to a triumphant note! Drumroll, please! Behold the digital snapshot capturing that unforgettable day when A Cappella Showcase clinched the First Place title at Harmony Inc.’s annual International Convention and Contest in Grand Rapids, Michigan from November 8 - 11, earning them the prestigious 2023 International Gold Medal Chorus award. Let the harmony of victory resonate! With "Pure Harmony" as last year's theme, 29 choruses from Canada and the U.S. crossed the stage and performed their two contest songs before a very enthusiastic audience and a highly skilled panel of judges. Under the umbrella organization of Harmony, Inc., an international organization of women singers, and directed by Jordan Travis and Associate Director, Amy Patterson, A Cappella Showcase consists of 78 singing members of which 62 sang at the contest and brought home Gold Medals. The chorus also has 5 competitive quartets who performed and achieved remarkable scores. The chorus credits and sincerely thanks their phenomenal Chorus Director, Associate Director, Section Leads and Choreographers for their unwavering dedication and commitment. They are also very grateful for the additional coaching sessions received from Patrick Brown and Cindy Hansen, two very knowledgeable and highly entertaining instructors. Not only was it wonderful to reunite with our harmony friends from both countries, it also served as a reminder that singing keeps us young, healthy and happy. After all, if a worldwide pandemic can’t keep us apart, nothing ever will! A Cappella Showcase won Gold with their performance of "When I Fall In Love" and "On A Wonderful Day Like Today", two amazing songs which they also performed at their Holiday Spectacular in early December, another huge success! Want to experience the joy of singing four-part a cappella harmony with a Gold winning, friendly and highly entertaining chorus? Held on May 31st in the event room of our new location and complete with beautiful balloons, lovely table centerpieces, sweet agenda cards, a quotation game and best costume prizes, our Installation Board Dinner was absolutely amazing! Under the theme of “A New Year’s Day in May”, our chorus enjoyed delicious potluck dishes, warm sisterhood, joyful singing and many, many giggles! The 2023 Spirit Award was also given during this event and its recipient is none other than Linda Hartnell, our awesome Lead Section Lead and talented singer who always dazzles us with her megawatt smile, her cheery disposition and her positive outlook on life! Please stay tuned for an update on the Honour Roll segment of our website which will come soon. Our warmest thanks go to Kathy Boksman, one of our talented Bass singers, and her amazing team of helpers for organizing this unforgettable event. Her theme was an original and well-thought-out concept which brought on laughter and a great deal of fun! Top Photo – Meet A Cappella Showcase’s 2023/2024 Board of Directors. Bottom Left Photo – We even had our own and very sweet Chef! Wilva Tasker, one of our lovely Baritone singers, served us scrumptious shrimp that she prepared with various and savoury sauces! Bottom Right Photo – Although many of our members wore very creative costumes, namely two jailbirds in prison garbs and holding their bail fund cups, a sun worshipper in Cabo, an adventurous New Year’s girl ready for her Polar Bear dip, and a movie star boasting a stunning and cheerful fuchsia boa, Dianne Wagstaff, one of our most entertaining Lead singers, had us all in stitches when she walked in with curlers in her hair, smudged make-up, different coloured slippers and rolled-down socks. She was a post-party mess and looked like she had quite the New Year’s Eve party because this is how she woke up the next morning! (Photo credits: Top: Maria Kim; Bottom: Rosie Châles)

We are also very grateful for the coaching sessions we received from Patrick Brown and Steve Tramack, two very knowledgeable and highly entertaining gentlemen. The event was followed by a glamourous and glitzy Moonglow where all choruses and quartets enjoyed delicious food, sang in beautiful harmony and had loads of fun! Performing quartets bring a great sense of pride, not just to themselves, but also to their own chorus, their supporters and the wider artistic community. Moreover, quartets often contribute to the growth and promotion of their art form. They serve as ambassadors, showcasing the beauty and skill of their musical genre. Their success can inspire others to pursue music and engage in similar artistic endeavors, thus enriching the cultural landscape and fostering a sense of pride within the wonderful world of song and harmony. In keeping with the above, we wish to extend our warmest and heartfelt congratulations to Onyx and Somesing, two ACS quartets, who respectively won 2nd and 3rd place at the 2023 Area 5 AC&C! Huge congratulations go as well to Continental Crush, the Champions of the 2023 Area 5 ACC, and to all the quartets who qualified for IC&C in November, including ACS quartets Road Trip, SWAG and Life is Good! We also are extremely proud of Sweet ‘n Salty, an emerging and very promising ACS quartet who were the mic testers for the Area 5 AC&C quartet competition held in Toronto on May 26th. The achievements of our chorus’ quartets are a testament to their hard work, talent and dedication, and they serve as a beacon of inspiration and admiration for all of us. On May 13th, some of our chorus members were honoured to sing in the String Of Love Concert & Art Exhibit and what an amazing demonstration of love and hope it was! The Laureate College private school, formerly home to the School Sisters of Notre Dame convent, hosted this very special event on a bright and sunny Mother's Day Eve. Not only were we invited to perform a few songs, but we were also entertained by beautifully talented vocalists and musicians! The concert was followed by an art and photography exhibition and reception where attendees met with the musicians and artists. It was a true privilege to be part of this lovely event organized in celebration of Mother's Day, and after witnessing such talented sweet children and young adults, we are confident that our artistic future is in brilliant hands! Held on April 29th at the Wellington Square United Church in Burlington, our Spring Forward concert was a resounding success, filled with unforgettable moments in an unparalleled atmosphere! Our beautiful chorus and lovely quartets sang their hearts out, bringing the people in our audience together through the power of music, performance and harmony. The combination of our bright and colourful costumes, our amazing audience and our special guest stars created a truly memorable experience for everyone involved. The highlight of the show was undoubtedly Take 4, four brilliantly talented young ladies who are also the 2022 Harmony Quartet Champions. They literally rocked the house and blew all socks off! It was wonderful to see how much the audience was engaged and their excitement elevated the whole experience to another level. Our Spring Forward concert was followed by an exceptional Afterglow with friends where we all enjoyed delicious food, toe-tapping numbers and sang tag after tag with Take 4, our fantabulous guests. The 2023 Spring Convention of the Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society was held on April 14th and 15th, in Belleville, and hosted hundreds of barbershop singers from around the province. Among them were two amazing quartets who make us so incredibly proud as they feature some of our extremely talented chorus members! Achieving a whopping score of 76.4%, Tonal Canons came in second while On Record placed 4th with an incredible score of 74.3%! Although all singers of these two remarkable quartets are extraordinarily gifted, special spotlights shine on Jordan Travis, our sensational Chorus Director and on his outstanding 14 year old daughter, Emily, as they both perform with Tonal Canons. Another spotlight beams on Amy Patterson, our amazing Associate Director, who sings Bass with the recently formed On Record quartet. A Cappella Showcase warmly congratulates these two wonderful quartets and thanks them for representing us at such a grand convention! April and May of this year have been filled with a flurry of events and we just now have a bit of time on our hands to inform you about all of our latest news! First of all, our chorus has moved and since April 4th, we hold our rehearsals at the beautiful St. James United Church located at 306 Parkside Drive in Waterdown, a few minutes south of our former location. As our members step inside the amazing church sanctuary, their eyes are immediately drawn to the breathtaking stained-glass windows that adorn the walls. These intricate artworks flood the sanctuary with vibrant hues of light, creating both a serene and ethereal atmosphere which is conducive to fantastic rehearsals. Boasting a very a high ceiling that reaches upward to create a sense of openness, this spectacular sanctuary allows the sound of voices and music to resonate beautifully, enhancing the acoustics for musical performances. Adjacent to the sanctuary, there is a spacious and well-equipped kitchen. It is designed to cater to the needs of our chorus, providing a place to prepare meals for gatherings, potlucks and other celebrations. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances, ample storage, and a large serving area to accommodate all of our needs. In addition to the main sanctuary and kitchen, the church features several breakout rooms. These rooms are versatile and can be used for various purposes such as small group and sectional meetings. They are designed to provide privacy and a quiet space for focused discussions and learning. Furthermore, the church boasts a spacious event room complete with a stage. This room is not only suitable for recreational activities, but also serves as a multipurpose space for larger events and gatherings. In fact, our chorus recently held its Installation Dinner is this incredible and ample space! Overall, this church sanctuary with its stained-glass windows, high ceiling, big kitchen, breakout rooms and spacious gym offers a harmonious blend of reverence while providing a warm and welcoming space for all members of our chorus and guests who wish to attend our rehearsals. What better way to start off the year than by celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of one of our most inspiring Youth Member? Although all of our singers achieve many of their goals, Sarah Patterson is a rising and shining star! Born in the fall of 2004, Sarah is our Assistant Director’s youngest child and we can only imagine how much music and the joy of singing in harmony filled this happy household! Throughout their schooling years, Sarah excelled in a myriad of subjects and was the recipient of the Musician of the Year Award when they graduated Grade 8 in 2018. More recently, in June of 2022, they graduated from high school with an overall average of 92.9% and were the deserving recipient of these three amazing awards: Ontario Scholar; Highest Grade in Art and Highest Grade in History. Sarah joined our chorus in January of 2018 at the young age of 13. Under the direction of our chorus director and his assistant, they worked hard and diligently learned their songs as a Bass singer, while excelling in school and holding a part-time job. Sarah attended every chorus rehearsal as well as the special ones organized for their section. Brimming with the passion of Barbershop singing, it wasn’t long before they joined Generations, an amazing ACS quartet who took 3rd Place at Area 5 AC&C in May of 2019 and no later than October of that same year, won the 1st place Women’s Quartet Award, Ontario District, BHS. Following two years of virtual rehearsals on Zoom caused by the worldwide pandemic we suffered, Generations came back with a bang and in May 2022, won the Most Improved Quartet and the First Place Quartet Awards at Area 5 AC&C. In October of 2022, Sarah was inducted into APOC as member of Generations (Association of Past Ontario Champions, Ontario District, BHS). That’s not all, though. Sarah has also served on ACS’ Board of Directors as Chair of PR and Marketing (2021/2022) and in August of 2022, they participated in the BHS Harmony University Next Generation Program. When asked about their experience at HU, Sarah stated “My best moments were the Next Gen rehearsals. When I first looked at the schedule, I thought that two rehearsals a day would be too many, but it ended up not being enough. Spending time with the other folks in the Next Gen program was the most fun, at meals, in electives, in between classes, and in classes. Those people really made HU the fantastic experience it was.” One of Sarah’s most impressive achievements in the world of Barbershop singing was when they were recognized as Harmony, Inc’s Youth Member of the Year in November of 2022 at the IC&C held in Verona, NY. In addition to the passion they have for singing, Sarah loves cats and you can often find them sitting silently with a book. Moving forward, they have applied to study psychology and are considering taking a minor in something more artistic to contrast the heavy academics of the major. Bringing youthful joy to our chorus while contributing to its healthful growth and success, Sarah is a treasure to A Cappella Showcase, to Area 5 and to Harmony, Inc., and serves as an incredible inspiration to all of our members. Our chorus is extremely proud of Sarah and can’t wait to see where their many endeavors will take them. Warmest and heartfelt congratulations, Sarah, from your riser buddies. Keep on shining! On September 24th, A Cappella Showcase celebrated 25 years of song, joy, friendship and harmony. The sun was out, the sky was clear and it was a perfect day for togetherness and warm camaraderie, peppered with Barbershop singing by the chorus and six amazing quartets! Filled with radiant smiles, beautiful decorations and balloons galore, our rehearsal hall also featured interesting displays of ACS’s outfits along with photos, stories and other memorabilia to remind us of the good times we’ve had together. Special thanks for the generosity and remarkable efforts of Mike Odendahl, Movinpics Videography. Mike spent countless hours compiling events, performances and entertaining moments which ACS experienced over time. As a result, our guests viewed a fascinating video of our chorus as it evolved throughout the years. There were also delightful interviews between some of the chorus members who commented on their feelings, unforgettable stories and hilarious moments they shared with their singing friends. Of course, there was delicious food, sweet centerpieces and a lovely scrumptious cake! Many wonderful guests attended this unforgettable event, including 13 of our lovely Charter members, and their attendance and warm wishes contributed to the success of our Silver Anniversary. This Open House Celebration was made possible by the chorus’ 25th Anniversary committee. Chaired by Sue Boere, the committee was comprised of Peggy Ann Budd, Rosie Châles, Hilary Flynn, Sherry McCarroll, Sheena McGuigan, Michelle Odendahl and Wilva Tasker who met frequently in-person and on Zoom for many months to plan the different aspects of this event. However, all chorus members contributed to the celebration by preparing delicious food in their own kitchen and bringing it to the hall which just proves that success grows out of efforts and cooperation between singing friends! Want to be part of a chorus where the members believe in each other and where genuine friendships are paramount? Just email our membership team at membership@acappellashowcase.org and come sing and celebrate with us! (Thirteen Charter Members attended the event! Photo credit: Myranda Amendola)

Arranged by Jordan Travis, our amazing chorus director, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah has been performed by A Cappella Showcase at many events and concerts, along with Paul Simon’s Feelin’ Groovy. However, on Tuesday, October 4th, these two classics had a very special meaning as we began our weekly rehearsal by helping a very meaningful organization. Margaret Campos, one of our lovely members, presented an idea to the chorus that could potentially help us bring joy and peace to persons with dementia and their family care partners through VRx@Home, a virtual reality (VR) at home intervention. Her daughter, Dr. Jennifer Campos, PhD, is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Multisensory Integration and Aging. Besides the many impressive positions she holds, Jenny’s research focuses on understanding age-related impairments and on how virtual reality and simulation technologies can be blissfully helpful. While conducting a study with VRx@Home to explore whether VR experiences can enhance communication between people with dementia and their family care partners, Jenny thought of the power that music and singing enjoyment can have on an aging population and asked her mom if A Cappella Showcase could possibly help. Since this Virtual Reality system is head-mounted, it gives persons with dementia the freedom to be transported to alternate realities such as being on a beach or attending a concert. It may also have the potential to improve interpersonal relationships between persons with dementia and their family care partners. Our chorus is dedicated to lending a hand to organizations that genuinely help the world to be a better, safer and healthier place and therefore, sang this beautiful package with all its heart for this wonderful cause. Sit back and enjoy our heartfelt performance which was filmed by Dr. Raheleh Saryazdi, Postdoctoral Fellow, KITE, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network, who visited the chorus on that particular Tuesday evening. Leader of this highly meaningful project, Raheleh was thrilled that we accepted to help through the power of song and harmony.

On Friday, November 4th, roughly two months after celebrating their Silver Anniversary, A Cappella Showcase became International Silver Medalists at the IC&C held in Verona, NY from the 2nd to the 6th of the same month. Under the theme "Together Again", our chorus, along with 24 others from Canada and the U.S., crossed the stage and performed their two contest songs before an audience and a panel of judges they hadn’t seen live for two entire years. With a rating of 83.6%, A Cappella Showcase achieved an outstanding score while maintaining its status as an A-Level chorus which it had acquired in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic at the IC&C in Sandusky, Ohio. A Cappella Showcase won second place with their performance of "When I Fall In Love" by Heyman and Young and of "You’re From Heaven And You’re Mine" by David Wright. Since David arranged both songs, the chorus received special coaching from this amazingly talented musician, composer and writer back in September which most certainly contributed to our winnings. Not only was it wonderful to reunite with our harmony friends from both countries, it also served as a reminder that singing keeps us young, healthy and happy. After all, if a worldwide pandemic can’t keep us apart, nothing ever will! Want to experience the joy of singing four-part a cappella harmony with a winning, caring and highly entertaining chorus? Do you have a favourite coach that you have learned at least one long lasting piece of information? A coach that has helped your chorus sound better or look better? A coach that has given you a better understanding of the music itself. A Cappella Showcase is a lucky chorus to have an amazing Director, Jordan Travis, and a great Assistant Director in Amy Patterson. If you have ever had coaching from either of these people, you know what I’m talking about. Every week we have both out in front giving us great coaching and encouragement. I recently had the privilege of watching Amy coach a quartet and even though I see her every week it was amazing to be listening to the words of wisdom and to hear the difference those words made. When you are in the chorus hearing the sound, you don’t always recognize the change as much as listening as an outsider. At A Cappella Showcase we know that we are an incredibly lucky chorus to have both Jordan and Amy as well as the top-notch coaches we bring in to help us achieve what we do. With that in mind, we decided that we wanted other choruses in Area 5 to have the same opportunities so we created a scholarship that any chorus in Area 5 could apply for. We sent out a notice to all the choruses in Area 5 with a scholarship application in which they needed to let us know the following: who the coach was they were looking at bringing in and when, what they wanted to accomplish from the coaching and what the financial burden for the chorus would be and why they should be chosen. We also asked that each applicant let us know if they were an ACC or ICC participant, whether they participate in education and community sing outs and shows. We wanted to select a chorus who had the financial burden but also was a part of the Harmony Inc community as well as their own community. In other words, a well-rounded chorus who had the desire to improve. We received two applications this year which our Board of Directors reviewed and at this past Area 5 ACC we were very honoured to present the scholarship to a well deserving chorus. Congratulations to Scarborough Harmony Chorus on being awarded this scholarship!

A Cappella Showcase has recently created an award that consists of a coaching scholarship given to one of the choruses of Area 5 who meets or exceeds the criteria of this program. This year, A Cappella Showcase’s Coaching Scholarship was awarded to the highly deserving Scarborough Harmony Chorus at the Area 5 AC&C! Judi Goodwin, President of the winning chorus, expressed her joy at receiving this Scholarship: “On behalf of the entire chorus, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for this very generous gift. The money will allow us to have much more coaching than we could have afforded, helping us on our journey to be the best we can be. Moving forward, ACS will award up to $1,500.00 as a coaching scholarship to a qualifying chorus at every Area 5 AC&C. For more information on the criteria of this program, please contact Angie Morton at president@acappellashowcase.org.

On May 28, 2022, A Cappella Showcase (ACS) performed their two contest songs before an audience and a panel of judges they hadn’t seen live for two entire years. Therefore, we were astonished to be declared the Area 5 Harmony, Inc. 2022 Chorus Champions, while achieving the highest score ever in an Area 5 Contest! More excitement followed as we learned that two other trophies were awarded to ACS: the Bonnie Barber Memorial Award and the Louise Malison Memorial Chorus Award. These beautiful trophies are respectively given to the chorus with the Highest Singing Score and the Highest Performance Score. After a mandatory hiatus imposed by the recent pandemic, A Cappella Showcase only started rehearsing their contest songs, live, last February and on a lovely Saturday in April, received special coaching from David Wright, an amazingly talented musician, composer, writer and arranger which most certainly contributed to our winnings.
